WalkAITalkie vs Superwhisper
WalkAITalkie and Superwhisper both turn speech into text on the Mac and paste it where you type. WalkAITalkie always runs speech recognition on your Mac and needs no account. Its Pro is a one-time purchase of $7.99 in the direct download. Superwhisper lets you choose local or cloud models per mode, also runs on Windows, iOS and Android, and sells Pro as a subscription or a lifetime licence.
Side by side
| Criterion | WalkAITalkie | Superwhisper |
|---|---|---|
| Where speech recognition runs | On your Mac. The app picks Parakeet or Whisper for your language.[12] | On your Mac or in the cloud, chosen per mode. Local: Whisper models (free), Parakeet and Cohere Transcribe (Pro). Cloud: S1-Voice, Deepgram Nova and ElevenLabs Scribe (Pro). The setup guide suggests the cloud defaults S1-Voice and S1-Language.[1][2] |
| Works offline | Yes. Dictation and Clean Up work offline once the models are downloaded.[12] | Yes, with local voice models. Superwhisper: “AI formatting offline needs the local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode. Other AI processing needs the internet.”[3] |
| AI text cleanup | Clean Up runs on a local language model and is free. Optional cloud accelerator in the direct download with Pro, off until you turn it on (see below).[12][13] | Optional. The default S1-Language runs in the cloud; providers include Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Groq. The local S1-mini is English only and works in Message and Mail modes. Pro can use your own API key.[4] |
| Price | Free: unlimited dictation, Raw and Clean Up. Pro: $7.99, paid once, no subscription. In the Mac App Store, Pro is an in-app purchase.[14] | Free: unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, up to two modes. Pro: $8.49 per month, $84.99 per year or $249.99 lifetime (USD), as of October 17, 2026.[5] |
| Account required | No. No sign-up and no login.[12] | Not stated for the free plan in the pages we checked. Pro is activated with a licence key.[6] |
| Use of your data for training | In local mode, no audio and no text goes to a model provider. With the optional cloud accelerator, text goes to your own ChatGPT or Claude account, and that account's data settings decide whether it may be used for training.[13] | Superwhisper's privacy policy (last updated June 19, 2024): “Your data is not being used for training AI models.” Cloud providers work under zero-data-retention terms, according to Superwhisper's docs.[7][8] |
| Languages | 38 dictation languages.[12] | “100+ languages”.[1] |
| Platforms | Mac only: macOS 26 or later, Apple Silicon (M1 or later).[13] | macOS 14 or later, Windows 10 and 11, iOS and Android. Superwhisper: “Offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon macs.”[9][10] |
| Hotkey / push-to-talk | Hold to talk, or toggle. Right Option by default in the direct download, F5 in the Mac App Store version. You can choose another key.[12] | ⌥ Space starts and stops by default. Push to talk: press and hold to record, release to stop.[11] |
| Pastes into any app | Direct download: pastes at your cursor with the Accessibility permission. Mac App Store version: copies the text, you press ⌘V.[12] | Yes, it pastes at the cursor; it needs the Accessibility permission.[11] |
About the optional cloud accelerator
Your audio and text stay on your Mac unless you turn on one optional path: in the direct download with Pro, you can turn on the cloud accelerator for one provider. That is the Codex CLI with your ChatGPT account, or the Claude Code CLI with your Claude account. It stays off until you pick a provider and confirm it. It sends text only, never audio, and the text goes to that provider, not to a WalkAITalkie server. If the selected provider fails and you have also agreed to the other one, session summaries can fall back to it. Dictated text never does. It handles session summaries and the description you write when you build a custom format. Dictated text goes to it only if you also turn on a separate switch for dictation. The Mac App Store version has no cloud processing. Update checks, downloads, purchases and licence activation use the network, but carry none of your audio or text.

Questions
- Is WalkAITalkie a Superwhisper alternative that works offline?
- Yes. WalkAITalkie runs speech recognition and Clean Up on your Mac, so both work without internet once the models are downloaded. Superwhisper also works offline with local voice models; for AI formatting offline it needs the local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode.
- Does WalkAITalkie have a subscription?
- No. Dictation, Raw and Clean Up are free. Pro is $7.99, paid once, in the direct download. In the Mac App Store, Pro is an in-app purchase.
- Does WalkAITalkie send anything to the cloud?
- Not your audio or text by default. The only path for your content off the Mac is the optional cloud accelerator in the direct download with Pro. It sends text, never audio, through the Codex CLI or the Claude Code CLI you are signed in to. Dictated text goes there only with a second switch. The Mac App Store version has no cloud processing. Update checks, downloads and licence activation use the network.
- Can I use WalkAITalkie on Windows or an Intel Mac?
- No. WalkAITalkie runs only on Macs with Apple Silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 26 or later. Superwhisper also offers Windows, iOS and Android apps.
