WalkAITalkie vs macOS Dictation
macOS Dictation is built into macOS and needs no extra app. On Apple silicon it can run on the device for supported languages. It turns on and off and adds punctuation; Apple documents no cleanup of your wording. WalkAITalkie adds hold-to-talk on a key you choose, a free local Clean Up that removes filler words and a history with export. Its 38 dictation languages all run on your Mac.
Side by side
| Criterion | WalkAITalkie | macOS Dictation |
|---|---|---|
| Where speech recognition runs | On your Mac. The app picks Parakeet or Whisper for your language.[6] | On Apple silicon, supported languages can be processed on the device. Keyboard settings show whether your audio is processed on the device; otherwise it is sent to Apple. Apple's macOS 14 guide says Intel Macs and languages without on-device support send dictation to Apple.[4][2] |
| Works offline | Yes. Dictation and Clean Up work offline once the models are downloaded.[6] | For supported languages on Apple silicon. Apple's macOS 14 guide: “no internet connection is required.”[2] |
| AI text cleanup | Clean Up runs on a local language model and is free. Optional cloud accelerator in the direct download with Pro, off until you turn it on (see below).[6][7] | No AI rewrite is documented. In supported languages, it inserts commas, periods and question marks automatically, and voice commands edit the text.[1][3] |
| Price | Free: unlimited dictation, Raw and Clean Up. Pro: $7.99, paid once, no subscription. In the Mac App Store, Pro is an in-app purchase.[8] | Built into macOS.[1] |
| Account required | No. No sign-up and no login.[6] | Built into macOS, no extra app to install.[1] |
| Use of your data for training | In local mode, no audio and no text goes to a model provider. With the optional cloud accelerator, text goes to your own ChatGPT or Claude account, and that account's data settings decide whether it may be used for training.[7] | Dictation processed on Apple's servers is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. Apple also stores related request data, as described on that page.[4] |
| Languages | 38 dictation languages.[6] | Dozens of languages and regions; fewer of them on the device.[5] |
| Platforms | Mac only: macOS 26 or later, Apple Silicon (M1 or later).[7] | Part of macOS, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.[2] |
| Hotkey / push-to-talk | Hold to talk, or toggle. Right Option by default in the direct download, F5 in the Mac App Store version. You can choose another key.[6] | Start with the microphone key, a dictation shortcut such as pressing Fn twice, or Edit > Start Dictation. It turns on and off; Apple documents no hold-to-talk mode. It stops after 30 seconds without speech.[1] |
| Pastes into any app | Direct download: pastes at your cursor with the Accessibility permission. Mac App Store version: copies the text, you press ⌘V.[6] | Yes, into the text field you are in. Not available while Voice Control is on.[1] |
About the optional cloud accelerator
Your audio and text stay on your Mac unless you turn on one optional path: in the direct download with Pro, you can turn on the cloud accelerator for one provider. That is the Codex CLI with your ChatGPT account, or the Claude Code CLI with your Claude account. It stays off until you pick a provider and confirm it. It sends text only, never audio, and the text goes to that provider, not to a WalkAITalkie server. If the selected provider fails and you have also agreed to the other one, session summaries can fall back to it. Dictated text never does. It handles session summaries and the description you write when you build a custom format. Dictated text goes to it only if you also turn on a separate switch for dictation. The Mac App Store version has no cloud processing. Update checks, downloads, purchases and licence activation use the network, but carry none of your audio or text.
